Breast Cancer is something that is so "marketable" to women because all are willing to help their future. Hallmark has many new products that they came out with for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Some of the product include stationary, an Olivia Newton John CD, and several other things that provide a proceed of the purchase to the Susan G Komen Foundation.

Avon has also helped tremendously in supporting Breast Cancer. They have a similar walk as the Breast Cancer 3-Day. The Avon 3-Day takes place over three days and walk about twenty miles. Though less walking, it is the dedication and support that counts. Avon produced products for Breast Cancer Awareness month as well. Production includes makeup, nail polish, jewelry, and other miscellaneous things.

Great efforts by Hallmark and Avon!!!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which means that many organizations, stores, and people in general are helping to support the cause. The one which I especially preferred was,

"If you are going through hell, keep going"-Winston Churchill

I found this quote to be extremely useful seeing that my feet were currently covered in blisters, my arch support was pretty much shot, and I was just completely worn out.

With only 13 miles on the last day, I focused on the task at hand...And that was walking for a cure. I signed up to walk and I was going to do it. I put the pain aside in thinking about both of my grandmothers and the other 400,000+ women each year who are diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I made a promise that I would walk and I did.

We came into Fairmont Park early in the day, but knew when we got closer, we could hear the music, we could hear the cheers, we could hear success. Once we heard the noise, it was like you couldn't feel your feet hurting, your muscles aching, your complete and utter fatigue of your body....It was non-existent.

Those wonderful words which we heard each night coming in... "Welcome to Camp" meant so much more when crossing the street to the finish line. It was the end to our journey but the beginning of another for so many people that we were able to help by walking.

Camping out was a blast!!

So camping out at first was wonderful....the sunset was gorgeous during dinner. And by far, the best spaghetti I have ever had on the first night. It was seriously a "Fattie's" dream...because eating was key in staying energized. The menu included:

Spaghetti

Green Beans

Garlic Bread

Salad

Three Layer Chocolate Cake (They knew how to please 2,000 women)

It was shaping up to be a great night.

BUT THEN it started to look stormy. The wind kicked up and it was getting dark, freezing, and rather unpleasant for camping out. Then the spiders started to come, In a 7 by 7 tent, 3 huge spiders the size of fifty-cet pieces were just hanging out with us...needless to say it started out as a restless night.

Where did we walk?

Each of the 3 days were spent walking as you may know by now, but here is a summary of the routes and things that happened each day. When we pull up it is still pitch black outside, and EARLY, but regardless people are dancing to the music and dressed with a smile. We are told that opening ceremonies will be starting shortly and to move towards the big stage.

Opening stretch starts: The perkiest woman I have ever seen leads the stretch. So energetic at 5:30 AM it is unbelievable. She tells us the regulation stuff...Like hydrate, eat, etc. And then she proceeds to cheer us on as we stretch out our muscles in anticipation.

Opening Ceremonies starts: The leader of the 3-Day comes on to stage and shares with us her story of her mother and the vow that she promised to her several years ago. Her mother died from breast cancer and two years after she passed on, she vowed to walk all thirteen 3-Day's that year. That is 60 miles, thirteen times!!! And with that story...I realized why I was walking.

As we walked out of opening ceremonies, we were cheered on by 3-Day staff, families, friends, and of course, the Sesame Street gang!!

And we are off....

BEEP...BEEP...BEEP!! The alarm sounds...I look over and see that the time reads 4:00 AM. Thinking to myself...what am I doing up this early?!?! Is this cause really worth it?!?! Most of my friends were probably just going to bed from the night before. Realizing I need to get going, I jump out of bed and hop in the shower.

I get out of the shower, put on my clothes I have placed out for this morning and pack up my Camel-Back. I pack everything back in my plastic bags, lock up my bright green straps and tell my sister to "HURRY UP..WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE!!" We walk into the hallway only to see about 15 other women coming out of their hotel rooms headed for a quick continental breakfast and then wait for the shuttle which will take us to the start of the walk.

We get into the lobby and all around us was the color pink. Pink bags, pink shirts, pink hats and team logos like you wouldn't believe. For instance, matching shirts that say, "These Boobs Were Made For Walking". And that was just about every team. We scarf down some yogurt and a muffin and run outside to catch the shuttle. We put our bags down below and hop on, only to find more team spirit. Pink cowgirl hats everywhere, of course worn by the girls from Dallas, Texas.

The bus filled up pretty quickly with people from all over the country, near and far. The 3-Day organizers say that the weight limit for the bags has to be under 35 pounds. I am thinking...Wow that will be nice to pick up at the end of a full day of walking...But I am also thinking...I don't think my bag has weighed that light before...EVER. Regardless...I just start packing and see where I can get from there.

I am the type of person that I pack everything I need and then add three more outfits on top, "just in case". But with tons of extras needed for camping, I need to be smart. So I pack my outfits for the day in ziploc bags in case of rain, everything will be protected. Then I start to pack the little things, like a tarp for my tent if it rains, which it is supposed to, clothespins to hold it on, lantern, bug spray....It starts to add up. 35 pounds!!

Once the bag is all packed and ready to go, I need to add "flare" to find my bag quickly in 2,000 other bags. Bright green straps will do just fine and a bright ribbon.

Bag Packed..."Flare On"...I think I am ready to go!!

Going for a little walk...

No Classes on Friday!! That is awesome right...wrong!! Friday's for me consist of training walks that I do in preparation. So instead of sleeping in...I had to get up early and start the process of going for an intense walk. I had already planned where I would walk...so that was covered but I had only driven my route, never walked it.

So I put on my Camelback and headed out for an adventure. Up North Chapel to Papermill and all the way up to NorthStar Road, almost to Pennsylvania I went. Boy was it a hike! I walked 11 miles this week just on the walk and that does not include the normal everyday walking and going out later that night. I didn't have an iPod or anything so it was just me and good old Papermill Road.

It wasn't very hard, but it was the hills that will get ya! On the training walks you have to be prepared to bring energy drinks, some type of food, and PLENTY of water. I was smart and thought ahead so I was very well prepared. But this Friday is an 18 mile walk...so I hope that I can do that with the same ease as last Friday!!

I am still taking donations as well, so please help support me. The proceeds go to the Susan G. Komen foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust for Breast Cancer. A minimum of $2,100 has to be raised by each participant in order to walk in the 3-Day. The walkers will camp out each night in tents located somewhere along the route. The route for the Philadelphia 3-Day runs from Langhorne, Pennsylvania to Fairmont Park in Philadelphia.

I will be participating in the 3-Day with my two older sisters, one of which is the team captain for us, Pink Tails. We decided to do this walk for our grandmothers who are both Breast Cancer survivors. By raising money and awareness now, hopefully we can help prevent the spread of Breast Cancer in the future. Everyone is training extremely hard for this walk since it is 20 miles each day for three days. However, it gives me strength knowing that I am walking for the 400,000+ women diagnosed this year with Breast Cancer that cannot walk for themselves. I am doing it for the sisters, mothers, aunts, best friends, girlfriends, and loved ones.
